How do you know if an alternative medicine practitioner is well trained and competent? |
[Edit] |
Answer
You never know for sure, but then..conventional doctors are properly trained yet they are 9000 times more likely to kill somebody than a gun owner. You should listen to what they say - does it sound logical? If they are recommending urine therapy and Ionized foot spa's then stay away. Double check everything that he says on the internet, and get a second opinion until you can trust him. Use your intuition.
Answer

There are many types of alternative practitioner; not all modalities require licensure or certification, so it can be difficult to determine who is competent, and who is not. Most alternative practitioners rely on referrals from satisfied patients to build their practice, and it is helpful if you personally know someone who has benefited from the therapy. Most practitioners will have a free 15 minute consultation to help you determine your comfort level with the practice.
Before seeking any type of healing therapy, conventional or alternative, it is up to a patient to educate themselves about the effectiveness and safety. Here are some tips:
- Acupuncturists-Nationally board certified through NCCAOM.org, Licensed Acupuncturists (L.Ac.'s) have a minimum level of three years of post graduate Oriental medical school, and can have advanced training in herbs, medical massage, food therapy, nutrition, medical qigong, and a multitude of acupuncture techniques.
- Herbalist-There is not a nationally recognized licensure specific to herbalists. Many acupuncture and naturopathic schools have in-depth herbal training. Herbalism is a huge field, and someone certified through a weekend program or mail-order training is not going to have a great deal of insight in to herbalism, as the field requires years of hands-on training. Ironically, most people rely on the salesperson at the local health food store to recommend herbs for them.
- Chiropractors-Obviously, chiropractors have an in-depth understanding of the human structure and are highly qualified to make adjustments. However, many chiropractors now practice are certified in acupuncture; patients need to understand that this certification only requires 100 hours of training in some states. Oriental medical school is 2,000-3,000 hours, and provides the ability of L.Ac.s to diagnose and effectively treat disease patterns beyond pain. A few chiropractors have also obtained a license in acupuncture, and would signify this with L.Ac.
- Naturopathic Doctors (ND's)-Not all states require a license to practice as an ND; this has led to a huge discrepancy in qualifications in this field. Respected and qualified ND's have attended a post graduate, on-site, college that requires years of training. However, there are mail-order degrees for Naturopathic Doctors that are not respected, or recognized by most states that do license ND's.
Answer:
Training for a minimum period of 5 1/2 years (BHMS) is absolutely necessary for becoming qualified to practice this system in India as it gives a complete understanding not only about the structure and functioning of the human body but also a thorough understanding of the homeopathic philosophy and its practical utilization while treating diseased persons.
