I have kept and bred many Pairs of Oscars over the last 20 years and produced the only DVD solely about breeding Oscars in the world I can quite definitely say that there is no visual way of sexing Oscars other than when the ovipositors are extended when they are in breeding condition.

Telling males from females is one of the most common problems a beginning cichlid hobbyist faces. For some species, males and females are readily distinguishable by color, size or shape. For others it is difficult or even impossible to tell the sexes apart in nonbreeding individuals. We call differences between the sexes "sexual dimorphism" and when there is no difference, we say they are "monomorphic". Oscars are the most monomorphic cichlids I know of, with no visual differences between males and females.

While "venting" is the only proven means of sexing Oscars without actually seeing their "ovipositors", it is not a procedure I would advise an inexperienced aquarist to attempt. There is 1 way to tell on the male Oscar fish there are two small holes where his bum is there is another hole witch will be the same size unless its just had a poo haha but on the female Oscar there is two holes and one is bigger than the other and one is the anus and the othere is you know what hope this helps

Contrary to what some people may claim there is no easily observable, physical difference between the sexes of Oscars. The only way I know of is to see them in breeding condition when their 'Ovipositors" are down. The females ovipositor has parallel sides and look like a square ended tube. The males tends to be more funnel shaped and ends in a point.
