Step #1 in finding out if a snake is poisonous or not is to look at its pupils:
- If the snake has slit pupils (as in a cat), then rush to the hospital - you have been bitten by a poisonous snake.
- If the snake has circular pupils (as in a human), then grab a dishcloth, and wrap it around your arm or leg really tightly, just above the bite wound. (Yes, this might hurt, but it really does help.)

∙ 15y agoThe water moccasin has a very distinct "neck" separating the head from the body. The head will be blocky as it is a pit viper, and when swimming, nearly the entire body of a moccasin "rides" up on the surface. They are very bouyant. The body is also very thick (girth) for the length. A common water snake will swim with most of it's body (exhibiting one or two coils above the water) underneath the surface of the water. The head is more slender and there is no distinction where it attaches to rest of the body. They are also typically slimmer than moccasins. Don't approach any snake unless your are positive about it's identification. I hope this helps you.
