By not getting the dog from a reputable breeder. Characteristics can be fooling! Check out the breeders backround, then you are certain. 3 generation background would be wonderful. Then write the check! A call to the AKC would be a good way to check what breed of dog you are getting !! We have had 62 Basset Hounds. I'feel strongley on my comments.
