SOME signs are extreme soreness for a long time; red puffy gums; pus coming from gums, elevated temperature ( a fever many times signals infection ); headache and other symptoms. You should have it checked by your dentist. Also, a simple, safe thing you can do is rinse your mouth out three times a day with lukewarm water mixed with two teaspoons of salt; especially after meals. GOOD LUCK!

The first 1-3 days following oral surgical procedures should be the time with the most swelling and discomfort. That is usually normal recovery time but if after 3-4 days your condition is not improving, there is a possibility of having a complication such as an infection. Things to watch out for after the first few days is increased swelling, redness, increased pain, and uncommonly a fever. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between prolonged or intense (but normal) post operative recovery and infection. If you think you may have an infection or are having difficulty breathing or swallowing, contact your surgeon and if unavailable, consider going to the emergency room.

You should not have an infection after a tooth is removed. If there's was infection after the tooth was removed, then there might have been an infection before the tooth was removed and some of the puss is oozzing out.

If the pain from the extraction is getting worse after about 3 days though, you may have a dry socket. This is when either a blood clot has not formed or has fallen out, then there is essentially raw bone being exposed. This can be one of the most painful things in Dentistry. Antibiotics will not help this. You can visit your Dentist and he or she can place an iodine dressing to help relieve the pain and assist with healing.

You will definitely know. There will be a very bad taste that gets worse if you poke around the areas with your tongue. You will have bad breath also. If your face is still swollen on one or both sides that is a good indication as well. If just one of the holes (assuming here that you had all 4 removed at the same time) is sore and the others are not try pulling your cheek back and looking, if it appears swollen, white, yellow or just odd to you push a little with your finger. You may see puss appear. If for any reason you think you have an infection after having your wisdom (or any tooth) pulled call your surgeon for an emergency visit. These are usually free and s/he will be able to put you at ease either way.

Another thing to know (and not freak out about) is that you may feel like a pin needle is poking your gums, tongue or cheeks where the wisdom teeth were removed. These are bone fragments, totally harmless and happen to a lot of people. If you feel one and it bothers you tell your surgeon he will be able to pluck it out in about 60 seconds and the relief is immediate.

An infection after a tooth extraction can happen if there is a dry socket. Infections can also occur when post-extraction guidelines are not followed properly.

When can you drink coffee after wisdom tooth extraction?

After wisdom tooth extraction, it's generally recommended to wait at least 24 hours before drinking coffee or any other hot beverages. Drinking hot liquids too soon after the extraction can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket, which is essential for proper healing. This can lead to a condition called dry socket, which can be painful and delay the healing process. Once you're past the initial 24-hour period, you can start introducing lukewarm liquids, including coffee, into your diet. However, it's important to continue to be cautious. Drinking through a straw or rinsing your mouth vigorously should be avoided, as these actions can also disrupt the healing process. If you experience any pain, swelling, or bleeding after drinking coffee or any other beverage, stop and consult your dentist or oral surgeon. They can provide further guidance on when it's safe to resume drinking coffee and other hot beverages after wisdom tooth extraction.
