Epilepsy is not considered until you have had more than one seizure. In order to be diagnosed with epilepsy, a neurologist will have an EEG done. This reads the electrical activity in your brain. From there, the doctor can determine weather or not you are epileptic.

When a person is having seizure like symptoms, you need to rule out other possible causes for that behavior. For the purposes of the question, let us assume the person having an "attack" or seizure is a diagnosed epileptic. There are different types of epilepsy and therefore there are different types of "attacks". Persons with a form of petit mal eplipsy may have an "attack" that other people standing right next to them do not recognize as an attack. Often these people may just become slightly unfocused and distracted. They tend to loose a few minutes or seconds of their life, thus they may have a slight lapse in any conversation in which they are engaged. Persons with gran mal seizures are much more obvious when they are suffering an attack. They can rarely stand up or sit up during a seizure. Often a person will have difficulty controlling any motion what-so-ever. However, a person will often have muscles that tense and relax during the seizure. There is a reaction in the brain of these persons that send impulses to the muscles that cause them to spasm uncontrollably. Often the person may drool and make choking sounds. If you are with someone who is suffering a seizure, your goal should be to be sure they do not hurt themselves. Turn the person on their side and insert a stick or similar object in the mouth to prevent them from biting their tongue off and swallowing it. NEVER put your fingers in their mouth, as you may loose a finger taht way. Call for help. Be warned, seizures may occur at any time and any place. Take care when the person is swimming or in a shower or bath tub. Driving is sometimes prohibitted and the prohibition should be honored in order to prevent harm to other people on the road.

If you exhibited any of the various types of seizures you may suspect that you have epilepsy; however you will not confirm it until you have an EEG (electroencephalogram). This diagnostic test will show whether the abnormal brain wave patterns of epilepsy are present or not. Seizures can come from many sources other than epilepsy.

Basically to know if you have it you need to get an EEG which is basically a brain scan. ALso you would need to see a docter, but one of the quickest ways you can figure out if you may have it is if you have seizures that happen at random times. For example if you sleep on a water bed and someone tells you that you were jerking and twitching in your sleep then you may have Epilepsy. Take this from someone who just got diagnosed 'Epilepsy-Free' earlier last year

Depending on the type, with me I can tell as I feel unwell to begin with then I sit down and feel my legs tense up and feel like a hangover afterwards when I eventually come round. If you think you had one see a doctor.

Unless you actually see a person having a seizure, you would not know that they have epilepsy. A person who has epilepsy does not look any different to any other person or behave differently, except when they are having a seizure. So only if you are told that they have epilepsy or see them having a seizure, you would have no way of knowing.

Hello,

I see you are asking "What is sleep epilepsy?"

Some people with epilepsy have 'asleep seizures' (sometimes called 'nocturnal seizures'), which happen when they are asleep, as they are falling asleep or as they are waking up. Frontal lobe epilepsy is a type of epilepsy where seizures can commonly happen during periods of NREM sleep as well as when awake

Why dont you no when im having a seizures?

If you mean why others might not know you are having a seizure, it could be because it is a very mild seizure that nobody notices. If you mean why don't you know when you are having a seizure it is because maybe you are unconscious or like in a daze or daydream, so you would not know or be aware of anything that is happening to you or around you. Seizures are a temporary disruption of brain activity so you can be affected and not know what is happening. Afterwards you will often know you have had one because of the way you feel or you may realise that you weren't conscious for a few minutes.

Why do you forget your fits?

When you have a seizure, your brain is malfunctioning so you are not conscious of what is going on. It is like the fact that you do not remember being asleep. You can remember dreams when you sleep and you may remember having a dream when you have a seizure. Whether you do or not, you will usually know that you have had a seizure, in the same way that you will usually know that you have been asleep.
