If you have a sand filter You will note a pressure gauge on it When the needle goes too high into the red or when it indicates high pressure the filter will need to be back washed. To do this (stop the pump) then turn the handle on top of the sand filter to back wash. Start the pump. Usually there is a clear bubble on the side of the multi port control unit on top of the sand filter through which you wil see the water that is doing the backwash. This water is going to waste. watch it until it runs clear again and then stop the pump. Now turn the handle to rinse and start the pump again. this will help any residual dust from blowing back into the pool. let it run for about 45 seconds. stop the pump and return the lever to the filter position. If every thing was done correctly the pressure on the gauge will be down, there will be more suction and there should be a minimum of residual dust getting back into the pool via the returns.

If you have a cartridge filter Just pull the lid of the cartridge filter Pull out the cartridge element and hose it down taking care to get as much dirt as possible from between the creases. Put the elements back in put the lid back on screw it down and let her rip. you should have proper suction again.

You should know the following:

Size and type of old filter; what type of filter are you considering; size of pool - gallons of water; size and type (copper or PVC) of Plumbing lines and how long is the run ( you have to figure in the hydraulics); horse power rating of pump - age and style of pump; does pool have a heater - BTU's. And do you have room for the new filter when the old one comes out?

A pool pump generally comes equipped with a hair filter. When you look down at it you can see the water inside it. To empty it you uncrew the lid over the top of it pull it out and turn it upside down. If you are talking about a cartridge filter that is the cylindrical unit usually standing near the pump, take of the top with the pump turned of, then pull out the filter cartridge this can be cleaned by hosing the dirt of it. if it is torn or broken in any way take it to a pool shop or the manufacturer and purchase a replacement.

If you have a sand filter and the sand has been in it for more then four years and you are finding that it needs back washing too often or the water is just not cleaning up the way it used to, replace the sand.

If you have a cartridge filter the and the back pressure is constantly too high even after cleaning it you may need to deep clean it with a cleaner recommended for your particular type of cartridge (get advice from your pool shop or the manufacturer) or the cartridge may be torn or worn out in which case it will need replacing.
