  • They can do one or all of these things: Fall over and become disoriented, Their limbs will become stiff and rigid, They can drool and "chomp" ( keep hands out of a dogs mouth when it is having a seizure! They can have loose bowel and/or bladder control; twitch /shake/tremble uncontrollably. Sometimes a seizure can last for 10 seconds and sometimes it can last for 10 minutes. Some dogs will have "gran-Mal" seizures which is where they continue experiencing these symptoms over and over again with no rest or relief in between episodes.
  • Dogs can remain almost completely still during an episode. The only clue that may key you in to the fact that they are having a seizure is that their eyes are moving back and forth very rapidly; their heads may twitch slightly and they may begin to vocalize such as grow; bark; whine or howl for apparently no reason. Seizures can be an indication of a number of different problems ranging from epilepsy; ear infections to something as serious as chemical poisoning. Get your dog to a vet as soon as possible. to make sure whatever is causing the seizures is not life threatening.

Seizures in dogs can manifest in many forms. They range from petit mal to grand mal seizures, with many variations in between.

Petit mal seizures often cause the dog to stop and suddenly stare off into space with a blank look, in a semi-conscious state.

Partial seizures can target only a certain part of a dog's body, such as in the face or just one side of the body.

Complex partial seizures can result in a variety of erratic behaviors, from the dog running around the house to standing and staring into space, drooling, and unresponsive.

Cluster seizures are when your dog has many seizure episodes closely after one another.

A grand mal seizure is the most severe, and causes the dog to go rigid, fall down, convulse violently, drool, and sometimes lose control of its bowels.

Generalized, tonic-clonic (formerly called grand mal) seizure: The seizure begins with contraction of all skeletal muscles and loss of consciousness. The dog usually falls to his side with the legs stretched out and the head back. This is the tonic portion of the seizure. Sometimes he will vocalize or have facial twitching. Vocalizations are involuntary and do not indicate pain. Often the dog will drool excessively, urinate, defecate or eliminate his anal glands. The tonic portion of the seizure is usually very brief and gives way to the clonic phase of the seizure. Once the clonic phase begins the dog will have rhythmic movements. Typically this consists of clamping the jaws and jerking or running movements of the legs.Following the seizure, the dog may lay motionless for a brief period. Eventually he will get up on his feet and may appear to be perfectly normal, but typically will show signs of post ictal behavior. These signs may include blindness, disorientation, pacing or running about the house bumping into things. The post-ictal behavior can last anywhere from hours to days after a seizure. Not all generalized seizures follow this pattern. Another type of generalized seizure is the tonic seizure, in which motor activity consists only of generalized muscle rigidity without the clonic phase. Less common are clonic seizures where there is no tonic phase and some dogs suffer milder generalized tonic-clonic seizures in which consciousness is maintained. Partial seizures: Partial seizures are also called focal seizures and as the name indicates, the electrical storm is affecting only a part of the brain. A partial seizure may stay localized or it may expand to the whole brain and cause a tonic-clonic seizure. Because the seizure starts in only a part of the brain, an underlying disease or injury is highly suspected. A partial seizure may remain localized or spread to other parts of the cerebral cortex producing a sequential involvement of other body parts. Partial seizures are classified as simple focal seizures when consciousness is preserved and as complex focal seizures when consciousness is altered. Any portion of the body may be involved during a focal seizure depending on the region of the brain affected. In a simple partial seizure, the area of the brain that is affected is the area that controls movement. Usually the face is affected, resulting in twitching or blinking. This is usually limited to one side of the face. If the seizure spreads, other parts of the body on that same side will be affected. The dog is usually alert and aware of his surroundings. A complex partial seizure will originate in the area of the brain that controls behavior and is sometimes called a psychomotor seizure. During this type of seizure, a dog's consciousness is altered and he may exhibit bizarre behavior such as unprovoked aggression or extreme irrational fear. He may run uncontrollably, engage in senseless, repetitive behavior or have fly-snapping episodes where he appears to be biting at imaginary flies around his head.

It doesn't matter what breed the dog is, a seizure is a seizure. First of all I would recommend you take your dog to your Veterinarian to have him or her checked over.

Seizures can look differently, some are quiet, where the dog just acts restless and will stare off into space with their eyes glazed. A full blown seizure is where the dog is lying down and paddling with their legs. Their mouths can be chomping. The best thing to do if having a full blown seizure is to hold them close and just gently whisper loving words to them, just hold them gently but firmly throughout the seizure then get them into a Vet as soon as possible. There are many things that can cause seizuring, such as poison, epilepsy, etc. If you suspect poisoning, time is of the essence and get them into a VET ASAP!

There are many different types of seizures, so one seizure can look completely different from another. But they range from petit mal seizures in which the dog may appear to just look blankly off into space for some time, to grand mal seizures where the dog goes rigid, collapses, convulses violently, froths at the mouth and completely loses conciousness.
