When a small hole in the egg appears, called a peephole, that means it will start to come out in about 12 hours. It may take a little longer, so be ready to wait. You will also be able to here faint peeping. The peeping starts when the duckling puts is bill in the air sack, that is on the large side of the egg. Don't take the duckling(s) out of the incubator or sore of warmth till after at least 12 hours! The duckling(s) won't need food or water for 24 hours.

Well when something is born no matter how it is, it is from some form of egg or capsule. Sometimes it just needs to mature or germinate depending upon how you look at it. If it was eaten I would have to guess that atleast 1/3-75% of the top is off with no where of it to be found. It were hatched chances are you would find the top.

It takes about 28 days for a fertile duck egg to hatch. Hold the duck egg up to a bright light. Usually you can start to see growth within the egg as veins in the embryonic sack that lines the inside of the shell.

You "candle" it the same way professional breeders do.

Find a small strong flashlight and go into a dark room. Put the light up against the egg and look at the light from the opposite side of the egg. You should see a shadow inside the egg if it is developing a duckling. If you do, get the egg back to the nest ASAP.

Without incubating it? You can't. If you could, the poultry industry would pay a fortune to know the secret.

Hold it up to a candle in a dark room, candle behind it. If you see the silhouette of a duckling inside, keep the egg warm and turn it every hour for the next few weeks. It will hatch.
