Common signs of imminent death include complete refusal to eat or drink, complete or significant refusal to interact with others, laying down and not moving and showing signs of difficulty breathing (gasping, harsh breathing sounds, excessive movement to the rib cage during inhalation and exhalation, etc.).

In this situation, if you can't get to a veterinarian within a few minutes, you are probably about to watch your dog die. If your dog isn't fighting it (many older animals appear to simply resign themselves to death and more or less go with it), the best option may be to simply be there and say goodbye. If your dog is fighting to live (you see evidence of struggle or anxiety), hopefully you can get to a veterinarian in time to get treatment started.
