How do you learn how to read ECG easily?

Answer:
It is a difficult skill that requires practice and good teaching, but there are a number of things you need to learn first. An ECG measures the electrical signal that flows through the heart, causing contraction in different parts.

  1. First understand the theory behind an ECG. Conduction of electricity through the heart, where the electical impulses originate from, where they can get blocked or stopped and how the position of the ECG leads affects the shape of the trace.
  2. Look at the distance between similar parts of the ECG (E.G. P wave to P wave distance). Are they regular? Irregular? Irregularly irregular? In normal sinus rhythm that is repeatable, or an odd rhythm that is repeatable? Odd rhythm that is completely random?
  3. Look at the distances between certain sections of the ECG. E.G. QRS complex length, S-T segment length.
  4. Learn the different, commonly repeatable signs of problems within the heart!
