Very carefully!

LOL Good one..

Just start it with paper and sticks like a normal camp fire or fire place. Add coal. The wood will burn hot enough to start the coal.

DO NOT use coal in a wood burning device. It burns too hot.

I want you around to ask more questions.

start off by crumpling up a few sheets of newspaper, and placing them on the grate. then, take about 15/20 pieces of kindling wood and criss-cross them on top

of the paper. next, take about 6/10 medium size pieces of coal and spread them out on top of the kindling so there's plenty of space for airflow. light the paper in several different places. once the coal is burning well, gently poke it to release ash build up. use your shovel to rake the burning coal into the centre of the grate, then place more around the outside of the burning coal. sit back with a Hot Chocolate and enjoy :)

Yes. The reverse is not always true (no coal in a wood stove)

If you burn wood in a coal burning stove, it is not advisable to burn coal in that same stove. The problem is that the wood puts creosote into the chimney, which has to be cleaned out. When you switch back to coal, the gas from the coal may be hot enough to ignite the creosote, even if the coating is relatively light, causing a flue fire.

Heating and cooking using coal pre-dates history. It is impossible to say who first made such a stove.
