Don't Repair Flooded Water HeaterA hot water heater should not be relit after a flood. It should be replaced. This is the recommendation of the US federal government and the American Gas Assoc.

What is the justification for this?

It is silly to replace the entire heater when the fix is so easy.

1. you will need a visegrip or three specific open ended wrenches. under the gas control box remove the nut for the pilot tube, the main gas tube and the pilot senser tube. If it has a peizo electric ignition button, just pull the wire out.

2.Now remove the inner panel, four screws in the corner, some require a torx head screwdriver. Pull out the entire burner unit. Using two visegrips or open ended wrenches remove nut holding pilot gas tube to the gas jet. You will find the gas tube full of water. Blow it out.

3. The gas jet has an insert with a tiny hole. Pull that insert out and clean the hole.

4. use rags or paper towels and dry off the burner.

5. Reassemble in reverse order and follow the lighting instructions. it will work fine.

Hot water in bath not working?

If the tub is not getting hot water the issue is probably with the hot water heater. The hot water heater may have tripped a breaker or the pilot light went out.

If you open hot water valve on the hot water heater what would happen?

The hot water valve should always be open, so the hot water can exit the heater into the system. If your actually meaning opening the drain valve on the bottom of theater, the water in the heater will drain, starting with the hot water stored there, and then the cold water that is entering the tank to replace it will simplt flow out the bottom before being heated. Dpending on where the heater is located will denepnd on how much of a mess the ensuing flood will be.

What is really called a water heater or hot water heater?

It's called water heater. There isn't a reason to heat hot water

If the pilot light goes out on your hot water heater is it dangerous or harmful?

No, it is not dangerous. (Unless you are working with a water heater that is 20+ years old.) In any modern hot water heater, if the pilot light goes out a fail-safe will go off - preventing gas from leaking out. Also, there is a sensor so if there is not enough air-flow or oxygen with the water heater, it will shut off the gas.

Is it called a hot water heater or water heater?

It's because "hot-water" is a compound adjective, modifying "heater". It's not for heating water, it's for heating a house with hot water. There are many types of heaters that heat water, but only a hot-water heater is used for providing heated water for domestic use. A hydronic boiler also heats water, but it's only for use in radiators. The name "Hot Water Heater" is completely wrong for any use. There is no need to heat hot water. IT has always been "water heater". The term hot water heater has just been used for years because people don't realize the difference. It has always been WATER HEATER.The first answer is jibberish and makes no practical sense at all.
