The M1 is loaded with the En-Bloc clip, holding eight 30-06 cartridges...
Pull the operating lever (attached to the right side of the bolt, looking from the rear) back until the bolt locks open. Insert the loaded clip from the top, pushing it down with your thumb until it seats. Get your thumb out of the way! As soon as the clip seats it will release the bolt, which will travel forward and pick up and chamber the first cartridge. The weapon is now loaded and ready to fire.
When the clip is empty the weapon will automatically eject the empty clip and the bolt will remain locked open for insertion of a new clip.
You can easily eject the clip manually any time. Pull the bolt all the way back, and hold it in place firmly (this ejects the chambered round automatically), then press the clip latch on the left side of the receiver, the clip will then eject out of the magazine.
