If this is someone who has retired or been discharged from the military, you can file a Freedom of Information Act request for their military service records.
Check the Confederate Navy records. There are a number of archives that might be able to help. And you can always apply to the National Archives and request the individuals service record. A visit to the web site will give you the necessary forms. Fill out with as much information as you have and you might be surprised at what they can provide!
