How do you make a dirt bike street legal in Connecticut?

According to Connecticut state statute all motor vehicles (including motorcycles as specified) operated on public road, highway or in any parking area for ten or more motor vehicles ( Chapter 246, sec. 14-80 and subsequent) must meet the following requirements. This is NOT an exhaustive list:

  • Must be registered and such registration (license plate) displayed prominently. A safety inspection may be required. Dealers are required to install etched VIN numbers;
  • Not exceeding maximum noise including required use of a qualifying muffler;
  • Not emitting excessive fumes or smoke, as specified;
  • Having a horn audible at at least 200 feet as specified;
  • Sufficient braking equipment, as specified; fenders/wheel protectors; tamper-resistant odometer; side mirrors; tires of specified material and tread; handle bars of specified maximum height
  • Sufficient illumination: headlights, taillights, license plate lights, reflectors, turn signals, and flashing hazard lights of designated number, colors, intensities and heights.
  • High beams or fog lamps if equipped, they must meet additional requirements;
  • Windshield, if equipped must be of safety glass, undamaged, un-tinted, and with motorized windshield wiper.
