You can't. I think you are talking about new DOCX standard. In this case only Microsoft Office 2003 with additional patch/plugin can handle this new format. You should avoid using 97 Office, it is not supported anymore. I suggest you going to free alternative (OpenOffice) or updating to 2007 or 2010 Office (coming in few months).
