There are many patterns for crocheting a granny square. Lots and lots of variations, but this is the basic pattern--
This will make an approximate six inch square:
Start with a, 5 ch , join in first ch.
1. *3 dc in lp, 2 ch*; Repeat * to * 4 times ; join B in initial st
2. *(3dc, 2ch, 3 dc) = corner in next sp, 1 ch*; Repeat * to * 4 times ; join C in initial st
3. *3 dc in next sp, 1 ch, corner in corner, 1 ch* ; Repeat * to * 4 times ; join A in initial st
4. *(3 dc in next sp, 1 ch) twice, corner in corner sp, 1 ch*; Repeat * to * 4 times ; join B in initial st
5. *(3 dc in next sp, 1 ch) 3 times, corner in corner sp, 1 ch*; Repeat * to * 4 times ; join thread in initial st. Cut, weave in ends
There are many types of granny squares. All granny squares start with a certain amount of chain stitches (usually 4-7) joined to the first chain stitch to make a circle. Basic granny squares consist of one type of stitch usually, with little variation in the pattern. More elaborate granny squares require careful analyzing and more time. To find a pattern for a granny square, type "easy granny square" or something similar into any search engine.
I am attempting the world's largest granny square right now. Mine is almost 11 feet square. i am attempting that as well! though i have not reached 11 feet sq ! how long did that take you?
You would need to specify the hook size, yarn name and thickness. I suggest you make a sample square, say six inches by six and see how far your yarn goes.
It is a proper fraction and can be simplified to 25/36 whose square root is 5/6
