How do you make a netherworld portal on minecraft?

Make a portal of obsidian like the following somewhere on the ground standing up:

then light it with a flint and steel and it'll create the portal.

On the over-world, simply place five Obsidian blocks vertically, then five at two blocks away from the first pillar. At the top in between of the two pillars, place two Obsidian to where it'll connect and do the same at the bottom. Craft a Flint and Steal, by placing one Flint and one Iron Ingot in your inventory or at a Crafting Table and right click on the bottom of the portal to activate it. If it keeps going as a flame, then there was a mistake when creating the portal. Simply put the flames out, and recheck the portal.

Note that, you do not have to place Obsidian in the corners if you do not wish to do so.

Imagine an upright rectangle of blocks, 4 wide and 5 high (14 blocks in total) and then remove the four corner blocks. The remaining 'O' shape of 10 blocks is the basic shape for a Nether Portal, the 10 blocks must be Obsidian Blocks.

Next you need to light the portal which you can do with a Fire Charge or Flint and Steel. This will activate it and create the portal within the frame. Entering this will take you to the nether, creating an exit portal there. Note that the exit portal's frame will be the 14 block rectangle, but the corners aren't needed, you can even mine them out from the exit to use elsewhere.

You make a nether portal by making a vertical rectangle of obsidian that is 5 high and 4 long. The inside of the rectangle should be empty leaving a 2x3 block hole of air. You need to then light the hole with flint and steel or fire. The normal portal uses a total of 14 blocks, but you can save resources by not putting corners and using only 10 blocks of obsidian.
