If you are referring to the emotocons then it is a colon and right parenthesis, i.e. :) Often specific editing programs will then interpret them into a true graphical form.

There's another way you could do but I don't think you could do it on a laptop. On your keyboard, hold the key ALT and press 1 or 2. Use the numbers at the right. Numbers at the top will not work. Like this: ☺ ☻ They're pretty small so I do this: or =D or :D or (: or :-) or :>)(im not sure if that will work...

If you can't see the smiley face writen like this it's because you can't do it the right way up so it's like horizontal.
