Well, to make a really simple toy that shoots, get a piece of wood long enough to stretch a rubber band on, glue another piece of wood on the bottom for a handle, and glue a wooden clothespin on top. You wrap the rubber band around one end of the wood (barrel), put the other end in the clothespin, and then the clothespin becomes a trigger, and you can aim and shoot. Not an amazing air rifle or anything, but it works. If you shape, sand, and paint, they can look really good as well.
