There are special shampoos you can buy at the grocery store, but its probably better if you just use aloe vera. When I lived in the Caribbean about half of my friends were Rastas. They would wash their hair with aloe in the ocean to grow dreads.

heres what u do. first u section off the hair into usually inch by inch squares. Then you would grab a square of hair and proceed to "back comb" till the hair is basically in a knot. After, u "palm roll" each of the back combed sections. After that is all said and done which can take at least 4 hours, u palm roll some dread wax into each one. Dont wash your hair for the first week and a half. The reason for this is to make sure that the dreads knot so they wont come out. After the first two weeks, u can start washing every other day. But continue to rub the wax in for DAILY maintenance. NEVER EVER EVER put wax into your hair while your hair is still wet!!!! It will lock in the moisture and mold will build up. And unless u want moldy dread locks, i suggest u don't do it. and that is basically it. any more questions, u know who to asks. oh, and use RESIDUE FREE SHAMPOO.

the true beauty of dreads lies in the imperfections. the lumps and loops that give each dread character.

Yes and no. Twisted dread extensions need the heat to set the fibers. Natural dreads are usually heat sealed, too, but if you would rather not use heat you can make natural dreads and just palm roll them constantly. NEVER use dry heat such as a hair dryer, as it will melt the hair.
