Actually, you need to go to a specialty shop. There is a food color paste which is stronger than the standard food colors sold in groceries. This paste is highly concentrated, much like the difference between water colors and oil paint. The results will be a true brown.

Warning! This paste is highly concentrated, so unless you want a mud brown, use very, very sparingly. I would reccommend a specialty baking shop in your town. These colors are also available online. Browse for "gel food colors" or "paste food colors".
