If the ankle is broken it will need to be set in plaster.

If it is "merely" a sprain, support with a crepe bandage should do the trick.

In both cases, pain-killers will be needed, as ankle injuries can be very sore.

Ankle pain could be for any number of different reasons: it might be a tear or rupture in one of the tendons, a simple sprain, or poor circulation. Rather than guess, your best bet is to visit a doctor, who may want to X-ray the ankle.

Would you be able to walk on a sprained ankle?

Usually, you can walk on a sprained ankle, but it is EXTREMELY painful. This is NOT advised. The best way to take care of a sprained ankle is to ice twice a day, 20 minutes each time, wrap it in an ace bandage or a firm, cast, and avoid moving it or walking. It is good to stretch a bit by gently moving your foot back and forth if you are able. Slow biking on a stationary bike is good conditioning, but do not run or walk too much.

Possibly a sprained ankle or a fractured ankle. It all depends on what has happened to the bones in the ankle. The best way to treat ankle injuries is to ice it regularly and if swelling in the ankle does not go down or if pain does not subside after about a week, it is probably time to see a doctor or have an X-ray of the foot done to see what the damage is.

A broken ankle - is set in plaster and thus the joint is immobilised until it 's healed. A sprained ankle is a muscular injury - and even the slightest movement will be uncomfortable until the muscles heal themselves.
