First, you draw a circle for the head. After that, you draw an oval for the body and rectangles for arms and legs. The spines are long, curved, but pointed at the ends. There are 6 from behind and 3 from pretty much any other angle. On the head, draw a curved line and separate the top from the bottom. Ears are small and pointed. Over the curved line, draw two eyes, and MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE JOINED! Under the curved line is the mouth. On the torso, there's a smaller oval. His gloves have two thick bands of wrinkled fabric... kinda. Finally, Sonic's shoes are striped through the middle. The tip is red and the back is white. There's a gold buckle. Congrats! You can draw Sonic. Honestly the best thing you can do is to go onto YouTube and type in how to draw Sonic. it's a lot easier, but this description is very good.

I'm not sure of what you mean by animated character. Do you want it to look animated like in a cartoon, or should it look like Sonic does in the old Video Games? Or perhaps a 3D modelled character? ( Too complicated to start with)

If you want to make an animated character you should find a program you can use for making animations. The most obvious would be Macromedia Flash Pro 8 ( Not sold anymore, but you might find it on Amazon or a similar site) or Creative Suite by Adobe. There might be other programs, just be sure that it can be used for animation.

Then you need to either trace the drawing you made or draw it freehand in the program you chose to use. Tracing means you scan your drawing to the computer and draw on top of the drawing on another layer.

Drawing is easier if you have a tablet available, but it is possible with a mouse as well.

It would do you good to learn to use your program properly before attempting tracing, coloring and animation. Learn about layers, how to draw with the pencil tool, using the linetool, fill tool, gradients etc etc. Practice makes perfect! There are tutorials you can use for this purpose, and Flash 8 has good resources in it's help files.

When you've traced your character you need to color it in your program. Again, make use of layers by adding a basic color on one layer, and add layers with shades and glows to give your character more detail. Don't get let down if it doesn't end up as cool as you pictured it. You get better at drawing and coloring with practice.

Now it would be good for you to know some basics in animation. Create a new flash file ( If you're using Flash) and create about 15-50 empty keyframes in a row. This might feel complicated at first, but when you get used to it, and know how to use the short keys, it will feel like a breeze.

Experiment with the frames a bit, and also with the onion skin. Onion skin lets you see the previous and following frames, which makes it easier to draw frames in an animated sequence.

Start with easy experiments in movement, for example a dot moving across the screen or a little explosion. Also learn about using tweens, as these can be a useful tool when you know how to use them.

When you know how to use frames and draw, you can try some more challenging animations. For example a hand waving, a head turning or a person walking. You'd be surprised at how hard this can be to do for a beginner. Don't get put off by how challenging it is, as everything gets easier and will look better when you train yourself and your intuition.

When you've learned some basic animation skills, you can try drawing your character doing different things, and try and draw a simplified version of the character. A simplified version is easier to animate because you need to draw each frame separately. A technique you can use to get the timing better is to use "keyframes" with a relatively low frequence, and then fill in the frames in between them later.

You can either just start animating your character doing something, and going along as you draw frames, or you can plan scenes and stories or maybe even whole episodes and draw consepts around these and develop them into full animations.

Remember to keep practicing! :)
