well, it's going to depend on what type of pin. I make homemade pins out of all sorts of things...bottlecaps, fun foam, plastic canvas...then glue a pin clasp on the back. If you're talking about the pins that you get for, let's say political things or photo pins, you can buy a 'pin maker' kit at a craft store...they are very easy to use and you can mass produce pins rather quickly once you get going.
