the common barriers to time management are: 1. Television - Televisions have proved to be an excellent tool when it comes to entertainment or information of the entire world on a press of a button, but on the other hand it is a great barrier to time management. Specially, in the kids this an addiction. Watching a lot of unnecessary shows on television is a barrier. If there is a particular show that we need to watch for work related purpose, then we should switch on the television. Avoid switching on the televisions in the morning, as this delays your entire schedule. Avoid watching late night shows as this will delay the day schedule.

2. Telephones - One of the top common time management barriers are telephones. While the telephone has been proven to be an excellent tool when it comes to methods of communication, it can wreck havoc on your personal schedule. If you receive a lot of unnecessary telephone calls, you may choose to screen your calls in order to avoid the hassle of having your time affected. You may choose to attach a caller identification system and an answering machine in order to appropriately screen and track important calls from others. Once you have your work completed, or the items on your personal planner have been accomplished, you can then take the time to return calls. This is also important when it comes to telephone calls that you receive on a cell phone. When you are busy, screen the numbers that show up. If it is important, take it. If not, let them leave a message. 3. internet - Internet has been a good tool for research, projects and one of the quickest mean to communicate. However, there is a disadvantage to it as well. People tend to do a lot of unnecessary work. Example: Chatting a lot on the internet makes us delay our important and urgent tasks, which makes us indisciplined and a barrier to time management. One of the way to overcome this barrier to time management is to check our emails and reply the immediate, important emails. Also another way to manage is keep half an or or one hour everyday or alternate days to check our emails, depending on our personal or official need.

4. Unexpected Guests - The common time management barriers are those unexpected visitors. This may include friends and family members that drop by your home unannounced, your boss and coworkers, or any other person that chooses to infringe upon your time. It is important that you learn to adjust to these types of distractions. Let your friends and family know that you prefer for them to call in advance prior to visiting. You may even choose to set up certain times for visitors. If your boss is constantly interrupting you and disrupting the overall productivity of your work, it is important to set up a meeting with him to discuss this. There are many creative ways that you can deal with those unexpected visitors. While it may not seem possible, there is a way to handle them without being untactful. 5. Unability to say no - Another common time management barrier is your issue of not being able to object to something. You must learn to turn people down and simply say "no" sometimes. If you are unable to do this, you will find yourself constantly falling behind and never achieving anything at all. While it is common for you to worry about the feelings of others, it is important that those other people know your true feelings on things. If you do not think that you can complete an assignment at work in a week, say no. If you really do not feel up to babysitting this weekend because you have to study for a big exam, say no. It is a simple, yet effective way to keep your time under control.

6. Procrstination - The habit of delaying accomplishments of any tasks to the very last minute is the most important barrier to time management. Once we know what we need to do, we must accomplish it as soon as possible. They only way we can overcome is be determined and understand that we have to do it.

This is an age old question. My favorite answer I got from success coach Brian Tracy. Brian says to always be asking yourself "what is the best use of my time right now." To help get a more in-depth answer of time management is goal setting and prioritizing those goals. The classic book by Stephen Covey, First Things First, is a real gem in that respect.

Recently, there is a new use of the Pareto Principal 80 / 20 rule which is the main determinate in successful time management. It is a new ground breaking book by Timothy Ferriss "The 4 Hour Work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich." Working 4 hours a week seems like pretty good time management to me.
