Unfortunately this is a trying topic. Some senior citizens have forms of dementia which effects the way they think and see things which this would include food and remembering or even knowing how to eat.
Other seniors tend to shun the food offered to them because they find they are too tired or sore and they just have poor appetites as they age. And others have various illnesses or disabilities that control what they are allowed to have or how they have to have it and they get upset by this because as you know losing your independence is hard enough to have everything controlled including their food.
Now in turn knowing what they like, liked or trying to find something exciting for them to eat is one way to project good eating habits. As well as schedule - seniors tend to be drawn to a schedule and are not fond of change such as getting up, washed, dressed, breakfast, maybe watch tv or read, nap, snack & tea/coffee, lunch, walk/read/tv/visit, snack & tea/coffee, nap or visit/walk, dinner, then maybe a visit or exercise etc. , wash and bedtime. Then start all over again the next day. It certainly depends on the motivation of the senior as well and how avid the family is in their lives. It all boils down to routine, choice, portion size, independence and making them still feel alive and useful.
If it is there and ready for them and something they like I have always found that they will eat - like Meals on Wheels for instance - they deliver hot four course meals designed for them right to their door three times a day if wanted. If they are lucky enough to still be at home - homecare is a good way to encourage healthy eating habits as well as gives them the independence to choose what they would like and even help with their caregiver in making it and on top of that they have company. There are a variety of ways to market good eating habits for seniors but spending time with them and getting to know a variety of them is the best way to really decide and find out because they are all individuals and not one is the same.
