maybe they struggle through life and they express how they feel through they're emotions and they express it even more by listening to song that relates to how they feel or what they gone through,...
They're people too, I know cuz everyone calls me emo just because of my looks and musical taste :( either way, just be yourself, maybe listen to a few emo bands, and say hi or whatever... a few good...
