For the first while, you do as you must. You act as if everything is alright, and soon it will be. Make sure you do some enjoyable things, even if you go for a walk alone or out to eat on your own. The more comfortable you are with your own company, the better off you will be. Consider going to church services and Sunday school for the company. If you can take up an old interest, that would be a place to start. Take a class or join a tour. If someone asks you to come along on any activity, do so.

By the way, I was divorced after 23 years...

When you first break up with someone after years of togetherness, it hurts in every possible way. You have invested a whole part of you in the other person, in the relationship you have shared. When they are gone and the relationship is broken, you have lost a part of who you were.

You need to understand that you cannot just "move on" soon after the end of a long-term relationship. It hurts terribly, but it hurts for a reason. Don't try to "move on" too soon, because it would be like denying that the relationship had ever terminated, and it only damages your life down the road.

The most important thing you can do right now is cry. When you cry, you let out all of the emotions that are building up inside of you.

The way I look at it, tears are like stitches to a torn heart. When you keep yourself from crying, you are only hindering the healing process. But every time that you physically demonstrate the pain of your inner emotions, the stitching tightens, and the healing begins. Over time, the wound heals, but it will leave a scar.

You will never be the same. You have lost a part of yourself through the loss of your relationship. You will never fully "get over" it, but rather, you will grow accustomed to a life without the other person.

One day, you are going to wake up, and you will realize that it hurts a little less, and then a little less, and then a little less, until you get back to a point where you feel comfortable in an environment without the other person around.

My fiancee broke up with me 8 months ago, and it still hurts to think about it. I know people that are still torn up a year after their relationship ends, and that is because they did not take the time to mourn the loss.

Don't be in a hurry to move on just because it hurts. Give yourself time to heal.

Then you have a decision to make, whether to move or stay for your relationship. Many people cannot handle a long distance relationship, they need their partner nearby because it is comforting and they need the contact.
