It all depends on which state you are in. In South Australia, you need to attend a police station and fill out a firearm licence application. Then after about 6 weeks, you will be sent some information about attending a "TAFE" course. Once you have contacted TAFE and booked yourself in, you attend TAFE to do the one day course (takes another six weeks to get onto the course after booking). Then TAFE will send your forms into the firearms branch of the police. Six weeks later they will send you your licence. You can then order a rifle. The dealer will send in a permit to acquire form, which the police will take about another 4-6 weeks to return. Then you can pick up your rifle and take it into a police station to register it. You will need a purpose built cabinet bolted to the floor so you can store it.
