According to the U.S. Department of Education, when a school closes "the generally accepted practice is for the school to make arrangements with the state-licensing agency to store their records." While there is no guarantee that the school did this, it is worth checking with the U.S. Dept. of Education. For contact information for your state, visit the Related Link.
If the school that closed is a public school, you can also contact the main office of the school district that the school was in. There is a good chance that they will have the records of the closed school.
If the closed school was affiliated with a religious organization, you can contact someone within that organization to help you find out where the records were sent when the school was closed. If the organization has another school that is still open, that would be a good place to start. If the school was affiliated with a particular church, that church might still have the school's records.
If you just lost the document, try to contact the school or district to see if they can assist you in getting a new copy. If it was somehow invalidated, you would have to take some kind of high school equivalency test.
Study.
If you want a COPY of your high school diploma (why?), your best bet would be to contact the high school you graduated from and see if they can send you a copy. Depending on why you need it, it may be easier/cheaper/faster to get them to send a transcript, which may be sufficient.
If your specific high school no longer exists, try contacting the school district it was in, or in extremis the department of education of the state it was in.
In general, adults who dropped out of high school cannot later earn a high school diploma, though they can get a certificate of high school equivalency by taking a series of tests.
Night school is an option for people who dropped school. Classes are mostly at night, local colleges do offer this options for people that for 1 or other reason dropped school. Do not recomend online classes, there are plenty of distractions online.

I attended New York University in 1970 or 1971 for my GED diploma. I need a copy please.
You have to contact the Office of the Registrar at the college. They will be able to help you. Ask for a copy of your transcript. They are usually available for a few dollars. If you would like a copy of the actual diploma, that might take a bit more work, but I expect they can help you with that.
