AnswerTo open the hood, you need to remove the plastic/fiberglass front end piece. It is much easier than it sounds. You do not need to remove the grill or the latch bolts. Unscrew the torx bolts that are accessible in the crack that runs along the front of the hood. The crack is narrow so you need to have a Toryx Key set (you can buy one at Sears for $4.50)

I think there are two bolts on each side, use the long narrow T30, and the middle bolt is T27, you also need to remove the plastic around each headlamp (leave the lamp in) and remove the nuts from the two bolts on each side, then pull the front piece off and the hood latch setup is all exposed Companion Folding Torx Key SetSears item# 00930527000 Mfr. model# 30527

I had a similar problem with my 2000 Cherokee Sport...

By removing the headlights and headlight mounting brackets, you can access the mounting bolts for the hood catches. One of the bolts was to the top right of the hole on the vertical panel and the other was above and to the right of the hole on the horizontal panel. Using a combination of sockets, extensions, and knuckles, the bolts can be removed. Once the catches are unmounted, the hood will open. (You can then manually release the catches and reinstall them).

Good Luck!

Thank you

I have a Jeep Cherokee Sport that the cable pull locked up. I tried everything to get the hood open. Nothing worked. I read the solution above, about removing the headlights and getting to the latch bolts, and it worked great.

Thank you for having this info on the web.

My 1998 cable froze (this is the 2nd cable - last one was replaced a few years ago).

The solution directly above worked well. Removing and replacing the head light assemblies is no big deal. I do not have the specialized torx required to get between the hood and the front cowling. Maybe this is the preferred solution at a dealership where they can compare diagrams and other Cherokee's. However, if you're in the garage with a good set of Metric sockets (13 mm) & flex joint sockets, I think the bracket removal process is the way to go.

What was Jeep thinking???? This is a major hassle!

FORGOT ALL WHAT READ ABOUT THIS,....1 TOOL IS NEEDED,.....I used my large Mac pry bar 2 1/2' long,..the 1 that looks like a large screw driver,...with jeep on the ground you can lay on the ground ,..come in at an angle to get the pry up between the grill and ac core into the bottom of the latch assembly, remember the cable pulls toward to driverside simply push up genlty on the passenger side, POP goes the hood,..I didn't even use a flashlight,... this would work on a bunch of different cars,...as long as there is access to to bottom of the latch

How do you open the hood on a 94 geo with a broken hood latch cable?

If it is just the inside handle broken off you can pull the cable with a pair of pliers. If it is in the middle, you should be able to reach up from underneath and cut the cable and then pull the inside cable. If the latch end has pulled off, you may be able to trip the latch from underneath, or take the grill out and unbolt the latch.

The cable between the latch and the handle may be broken or needs adjustement to shorten the cable so that the latch will fully release.

How do you open a bonnet on a Fiat Palio Go 2006 when the latch is broken?

The latch is broken, not the cable. You can still get to the cable where it is attached to the latch in the foot-well of the car. Grab the cable with a small vice-grip (or similar) and pull. Note that it is very unlikely the cable will break -the latch typically breaks before the cable since the latch is made from plastic and the cable from steel wire.

How do you repair the hood latch for the 1991 Mercedes 190E 2.6 the handle in the car that opens the hood does not work it does not pop the hood?

The hood is openned by a cable that links the handle in the car the hood latch. If the cable is broken or detached then the hood will not open. The cable has two parts, an outer covering and the actual cable that pulls on the hood latch when the inside handle is pulled, you need to check the inside handle to see if the cable is still attached to the handle, also you need to check the hood latch to see if that end is still attached to the hood latch. If either is disconnected the you will need to get appropriate hardware(nuts, bolts etc) to attach it back but if the cable is broken it has to be replaced complete. This you might or might not be able to do depending on you skill and proficiency with tools.
