How do you open the thermostat enclosure on a land rover discovery?

[Edit]

Answer

Only do this with a cold engine! Hot coolant will scald you!

1. Partially drain cooling system until coolant is below thermostat housing level. 2. Disconnect hose from thermostat housing. 3. Disconnect electrical connections from coolant temperature switch. 4. Remove bolts securing housing. 5. Remove thermostat. Refit: 1. Clean off old gasket from housing and/or engine. 3. Install new thermostat with copper element(spring) towards engine. (Note: If your thermostat has a hole in the ring, install with hole at the top(12 noon) position) 4. Install new gasket. 5. Install housing. 6. Install hose and clamps. 7. Install electrical connection(coolant temperture switch). 8. Refill coolant to proper level. 9. Check for leaks. Retighten as necessary.
