AnswerThis is an interesting question because I have never been able to figure out the exact requirements for a credit card except maybe a good paying job and non blemish credit report. But hold on, college students are able to get these cards without a job...huh! I've seen individuals get pre approved credit cards and did not have a better credit rating than an individual who had a better score. Why, this individual had a paid collection account and a few late payments over two years old. Wow!!! It is not just your credit score with a credit card, its income, weather you ever had a problem with another credit card and previous collection accounts.

Also there is forth bureau that you should not ignore because lenders use this company when pre-screening consumer credit to offer pre-approved credit cards and loans. Check out Phil Turner's Credit Bible.

I have a friend who has a 712 credit score and can not get an American Express card because he had a card with his ex wife and defaulted on the payments. The card was eventually paid via a collection agency. He applied for an Amex card and was declined due that old card that happened over 6 years ago.

I have a credit score of 667 and have a Discover card and American Express Gold. It's not as simple as them taking your credit score and deciding yes or no. Keeping low balances, having a good income (and employment history) and other similar traits will eventually get your score up, but in the meantime are better indicators to the card companies than just your raw score.
