Do the lightest color first, then the darker colors easily go over it. Study sample patterns from photos of actual vehicles. Some must be airbrushed, some can be hand painted. Research your subject to see how originally applied. For example, most modern day US camo for ground vehicles is done by hand with brushes in the motor pool, but that does not always apply to larger object like planes and armor from other countries. Some you have to airbrush or the lines are too distinct. I recommend Fine Scale Modeler magazine. It is a great magazine for tips.
