There are a great variety of pool cleaners available on the market today. these can be subdivided into several categories.

1 The robotic pool cleaner This type of cleaner has a power chord and is lowered into the pool. these units scrub, sweep, and vacuum dirt and debris vacuums and fi lters dirt and debris into a self-contained filter bag. the use of this type of unit spares the filtration system to some extent. this type of pool cleaner is fairly costly and tends more to be used in large or commercial pools

2 The suction side automatic pool floor cleaner This type of pool cleaner plugs into the vacuum plate over the leaf basket just behind the static skimmer There are many different variety's available. the main drawback with this type of cleaner is it cuts of surface skimming nearly altogether which is not good from disease control point of view.they tend to get stuck in corners if they are not rounded enough. However many pool owners are satisfied with their performance.

3 pressure side pool floor cleaners these use return pressure to run the mechanism that moves them around the pool and use a venturi system to pick up leaves from the pool floor and blow them into a net that is attached to the top of them. the advantage with this cleaner is that it does not interfere with the skimming of the pool especially if it has its own pump. the units that run on the filter returns tend to slow the systems water turnover down. They are very limited in the amount of litter they pick up and they blow finer materials straight back into the pool.

4 The Dragonfly floating pool skimmer. This type of pool cleaner is a recent addition to the pool cleaner arsenal, it is a skimmer that floats at the top of the water and attracts the vast majority of floating material on an average size pool from where it is taken directly to filtration via a leaf basket or in situations of excessive floating litter an inline leaf canister. this unit can be run simultaneously with a bottom cleaner where a splitter is fitted to direct water from 2 directions. disadvantages are that it does not work well during heavy rain as this tends to water log floating materials and sinks them too quickly. ad vantages are that they significantly reduce the bio-material suspended in the water leading to clearer water and more free chlorine.

I've been researching but haven't bought one yet...seems the differences are: some attach to your skimmer and run through the pump, others have their own bag & motor. Some clean the walls and the floors, some won't climb (my pool goes from 3' to 10') and work only in a above ground pool. It's certainly worth the research before you buy but from what I hear, WELL worth the money and it's usually recouped because you use less chemicals.

Research the Polaris cleaners first. They are the best on the market. Their website is www.polarispools.com. They will also help you locate a reputable dealer in your area and help you determine which type of cleaner is best for your pool. However, it will not reduce the amount of chemical usage. Having a pool cleaner will save you time in manual cleaning, but will not help sanitize your water. You would need an automated chlorinating system to help with chemical reduction.

I would go with a polaris and from there you have two choices Gunite or vinyl/fiberglass.

I had used a Polaris 360 with its own return line for the last 7 years and it had served me well. Every year I would bring it in for a tune up and it worked very well. This year I decided to retire it and purchase a Dolphin Dynamic electric with remote. I must tell you that I am so pleased and happy. The thing works great and does not tax your filter system. It cost about $1000.00 but you can get one for about $700.00 if you do not want the remote. I like the idea of spot cleaning and directing it to the area with the joystick. The reusable bag is 4 times as large as the polaris and the cleaner does and amazing job. If you are going to spend $700 to $800 on a Polaris and booster pump, I would go for the electric one.

Answ:: I would consider the suction side cleaners to be superior but each cleaner works differently from one pool to the next. Suction side cleaners require no booster pump thus no extra electrical hook ups or have no additional increase in your electric bills with a second pump motor running. And one advantage with the suction side cleaner is that with it installed you now have a movable main drain. Every cleaner has it's limitations. For instance, all are only as good as the capacity of the bag, basket, container or cannister in which the debris flow. Most will not clean the steps, love seats, shelves or spa. Some make clicking noises which a few people object to. ~ only a minor thing. Most "pressure" side cleaners ~ those that work with a booster pump ~ will not pick up very fine dust but will move it around and sometimes get it close to the main drain. Most auto cleaners will not eliminate the need to add chemicals or the need to clean your pool periodically. It also does not mean that you can fire your pool tech either ~ however, you will have a pool cleaner doing the pool every day. The cleaners that have attempted distributing chemicals ( tabs) from the base of the cleaner seem to have failed ~ with the chemicals being too harsh on the cleaner head and parts. k.

I would think if you had health risks they would be throughout the pool water in suspension not on the surface. Also, none of the cleaners on the market have successfully administered chemicals from their units no matter what type of cleaner. One major factor for suction side cleaners ~ those that use a second or "booster pump" is that you are using more electricity to clean your pool and with the emphasis on conservation I would certainly think the less electricity you use the better on your wallet and our environment.

The Area of greatest micro biological hazard to bathers is the top 300mm of any swimming pool. Sunlight, the heat from sunlight and environmental pollutants reduce the biocidal effectiveness of the pools disinfection system, while bathers activities add to the potential risk. Keeping this in mind the best pool cleaning absolution would be to concentrate on the top of the water with an effective floating suction-side pool skimmer, this would remove the majority of contaminant from the surface of the water then redistribute it into the deeper areas of the pool where disinfection stronger and water cooler. An added advantage with this method is that by effectively skimming materials from the surface there will be a reduction in bio-material throughout the water making available more free chlorine which in turn is more economical. Another factor to consider if you have a printed vinyl liner pool is wear-and-tear on the printed pattern. I've worked in the industry for decades and the repetitive paths and tread stress of some auto cleaners will wear the pattern out prematurely leaving bare spots on your liner. The 'Kreepy Krauly' cleaner is a good choice as it has been the only one I know of to not be a repeat offender. And I don't work for or know any of the K-K people. I work for a vinyl manufacturor and have dealt with these issues over many years of testing/complaints/R&D. Good luck. ~PickGuru

An above ground or vinyl pool cleaner has different feet which propel it and do not tear up the vinyl, While a plaster pool will have harder feet so they are not worn down to fast, You can buy a conversion kit from us Kenny 801-232-5893 800-488-2436

"Kreepy Krauly"

"Pool Vac"

"Pool Cleaner"

Your traditional automatic pool floor cleaners are not bad however they only clean the bottom of the pool and do nothing to keep the water clean. For an automatic pool cleaner that stops the water from getting dirty in the first place and sanitizes the the surface of the water where the greatest risk to health is have a look at the Dragonfly Super Skimmer.

Well, there are basically 3 different kinds of filter systems, sand, cartridge, or Dichotomous Earth. DE Filters remove the most particles from a pool and are also the most expensive. Cartridge Filters remove debris well, but sometimes the filters need cleaning and changing. Sand filters are the simplest and require only sand to do their job, however they fail to remove the smallest particles. So the answer is what is best for you? I think most people would choose a cartridge system. It is easy. Hook it up. If, after a while, it is not working as well, simply remove the cartridge, soak it and clean it. If it is not cleaning up, order a new filter.

There are a variety of Automatic pool cleaners and they are motivated in different ways However generally they can be put int several category's. Suction side bottom and surface cleaners these are connected into the suction of the pool pump and come on when the suction starts and pressure side cleaners which work by utilizing a venturi system for trapping larger particles like leaves seeds blowing the fine dust back up into the water to be sucked into the static skimmer. In the later category there is also the presure side cleaner that has a pump dedicated to it.

I had the experience of purchasing it. It happened on May 22nd of this year., I bought it this time because my old pool cleaner broke down

The old pool cleaner,,... ...Dolphin E10, it served me for the whole summer of 2021, but unfortunately, it broke down this year!

The new pool cleaner... ,,,,Aiper Seagull 1500, $699. I like it because it is cordless, so the cord doesn't pull me down, and the cleaning power is on par with the Dolphin E10. So far, it works fine, and I hope it will clean my pool again next year!
