Some simple steps for house-training your puppy:· (Please keep in mind that it is highly recommended that you should train your dog while it is still a puppy, as this will resault MUCH EASIER for both the owner and the dog.)

Choose the spot outside where you would like your puppy to go to the toilet.

  1. Keep your puppy/dog in his/her crate, pen area or even tethered to a chair where you are working. Your puppy cannot have free run of the house at this early stage. Every 60 minutes, take your puppy straight to the designated toilet area outside. You should also take your puppy after mealtimes or snacks, and after playing, running or having fun. Watch out for signs from your puppy that tell you he needs to go, such as sniffing and walking around a lot, or whining. Puppies usually need to pee more than adult dogs, as they are still growing. Carry your puppy/dog, or walk out on leash.
  2. When you reach the toilet area, walk back and forth or circle around and around. At the same time say and repeat a cue word you would like to attach to the act of your dog eliminating. I use "hurry up" but just pick out a cue word or short phrase and stick with it. In your dogs mind you are building an association between the cue "hurry up!" and him emptying out, so this is a really important role in the house-training of your dog. This is the first obedience training command you will teach your young pup.
  3. If your pup does eliminate continue to repeat your cue word and the instant your dog finishes doing his business enthusiastically praise and reward him with a small tasty treat. Make it clear that you are very happy with him and that he is the "best little puppy on the block!". If after 3-4 minutes of circling around your puppy shows no signs of needing to eliminate, take him back inside (put in crate or pen) and try again in about twenty minutes.
  4. Immediately after a successful toilet trip outside you can allow your puppy some free play time (under supervision) in the house. Just spend some time enjoying the company of your puppy, then place him back in his crate or pen area.
  5. Continue with this 60 minute puppy house training schedule, you'll be rewarded for sticking to it.

Do not feed your puppy close to bedtime and take away his water before you go to bed (don't forget to put it back first thing in the morning). You'll need to set your alarm clock to go off once and possibly twice throughout the night. This is an important step, just take your puppy out to the toilet area as usual and then hop back into bed. When your puppy is young it is physically impossible for him to hold on all night, but before long you will both be sleeping peacefully right through the night

First of all, realize that dogs don't make mistakes, people do. If your puppy makes a mistake in the house, DON'T EVER HIT THEM. Keep empty soda cans with coins in them all over your house (tape off the hole on the top) and watch your puppy constantly. When he/she starts sniffing around and seems to be needing a place to go, if she/he starts to squat, shake the can, then go over to pick up the puppy, calmly take them to the same place outdoors, and when they relieve themselves, make a big happy deal about it, praising them, petting them, hugging them and kissing them.

Crate train them. Any dog expert will tell you that making them sleep in a crate at night, and following a schedule (just like human babies) helps them learn so much faster, cos they learn what is expected of them.

First thing in the morning, take them out of their crate, to their "potty place" outside, and WAIT for them. Some puppies take a while to potty. They have to find just the right smells and spot. Again, praise them with hugs and kisses, lots of petting, an excited sounding voice. Soon, they will learn.

Now big dogs are MUCH FASTER with their potty training than little dogs. Little dogs sometimes take forever to learn, and some never learn completley.

Have patience, because your new four-legged 'child' only wants to please you. Never hit your puppy. EVER. Just yelling in a deep voice while shaking the can will get your message across. Learn to think like a dog. It will help you understand your canine buddy, and it will be much easier to train him/her.

tx

I would like to stress that physical violence is not only cruel, but will in no way help you in educating your pup. Dogs aim to please, and seek out assurance and rewards from their masters. Your dog will know from your behavior that you are not thrilled with them soiling the rug or furniture, if you are firm and consistent. There is no need - ever - to hit your dog.

First off never hit a puppy. Don't scare it if it goes in the house, it has no clue what its doing yet. Be patient. If you are home with the puppy during the day, every 2 hours or so, take it outside to go. Talk to it, literally ask it if it has to go out, say "come on puppy, lets go out" it will begin to understand the relationship between you asking and then immediately going out side to go. You can also get up during the night and let the dog out for the first week or two, this is a pain, but the dog will get the idea even better if you do this, just get up and say "lets go outside" and let the dog out. Dogs pick up on these things quickly. If it has an accident, don't yell at it or scare it, just clean it up, tell the dog "no", then take it outside. Make sure to day "good dog" after it goes outside. If you have to leave it alone during the day, you cannot abuse the dog for going when you are not there, just clean up and continue to train it as normal when you are home. Do not use those puppy pads, its a bad idea, just work with it and be patient. Good luck.

Chi's are actually pretty easy to housetrain. Mine was trained within a couple of weeks, she's 5 now and I've never had a problem with her peeing were she isn't suppose to. When I was actually training her I praised her when she did good...I practically threw her parades. I wanted her to know how pleased I was and she did such a good job with it. When she had her first accidents I basically ignored it, cleaned it up and went on with life. Never yelled at her or hit her, just tons of praise. Chi's want to please their owners and so they pick up training pretty quick. Just remember lots of praising when your chi gets it right.
How you potty train a Chihuahua will depend, as Chihuahuas can actually be litter boxed trained, if you live in an apartment, or for some reason, it is hard to take them outside on a routine schedule.

The most important thing about housebreaking any dog is consistency. It also is a huge help if you crate train your dog, as this helps them to naturally learn to hold themselves until they are let out of the crate.

Basically, you need to take them outside as soon as they wake up, as soon as they finish eating, and before putting them to bed. You also need to watch them and learn the signs they give, right before they need to relieve themselves.

You should let your puppy out every one-two hours. If you cant be home and the puppy is very young, have a friend come and let it out or take it to a doggy day care for the day. You should also section off one part of the house for the puppy to stay in. Like your kitchen. And WHATCH them. If they are sniffing, CARRY them outside.

You should NEVER scold your puppy after an accident has happened. You have to catch them in the act before you can. If you scold them after words they wont know what they have done wrong.

If its an older puppy and you have to be gone during the day, take them outside one last time before you go to wherever and DONT let them get a drink. Put a SMALL amount of water in its crate. When you get home, IMMEDIATLEY take them outside, then check the crate for any accidents. Again, DONT SCOLD THEM!

Good luck I hope that helps!!

Also you can buy a spay.when you spay it in a sertan place they will want to go the toilet there it really helped with my 5 mouth old puppy
You need to teach your pup to go on command. The links below will show you how but also there may be a few things you may be missing in the yard. 1. Is the outside area small? (if it is then feeding out there and expecting him to go out there won't fly as dogs don't like to pee and poop where they eat or sleep so make sure there is plenty of room or feed him indoors then take him out straight away).

2. Is the outside too clean? If there is not a scent of his own urine he will be less keen to go there. Try to leave it for a while (i know this is not very nice for you but it will speed things up).
We used the following steps for an indoor dog.

  • Decide where you want the puppy to toilet. We chose outside.
  • Make sure the puppy has access to this area (via doggy door or indoor "cat litter" style box if you can't get the dog to toilet outside)
  • After the dog has drunk / eater / played, take the dog to the designated area and wait until they have toileted.
    • Understand your puppies natural rhythm and make sure you take them to the toilet in time
  • Once the dog has gone to the toilet in the correct place, make as though it was the best thing they have ever done. We used a combination of high excited voice praise, treats and pats
If the puppy goes to the toilet in the wrong place (and this will be often for newborns), you are too late. You need to get them out to where you want them to go before they know they need to go.

If you do miss one, take them immediately to where they should have gone to let them finish. Clean the mess up thoroughly as they will go on the same spot if there is any scent left.
Crate training--go get a book about crate training from the library that was published since the year 2000 and follow the instructions to the letter. Most puppies can be housetrained within 2-3 days, but certainly within a week.
Puppy Potty Training should begin as soon as your puppy gets home. Puppies urinate frequently and success in house training a puppy depends on anticipating their needs - they should be given the opportunity to relieve themselves at least every two hours. You can usually tell when a puppy 'wants to go' because it will begin looking around, walk in circles and start sniffing for a place. That's your cue to take your pet outside or to the designated area.

Remember you must stick to a strict routine, when house training a puppy, so it will quickly learn to be clean within the home. It is also important when learning how to potty train a puppy, that you don't get complacent, or your dog's toilet training can take a back-slide. Continue with the toilet training routine until you are sure that your puppy knows that indoors is not the place to go. Gradually decrease the number of outdoor trips and newspapers inside, but if there are any accidents, just increase the number of visits outdoors again.

This is how i have trained my pups and it has worked very effectively. Within about 2 weeks.

Keep your puppy in one certain area in your house. Probably in your kitchen, near the garage, or wherever there is wood flooring.

When your puppy eats or drinks, lock him/her up in their crate. Wait for about half an hour when the pup ate or 10 minutes if the pup drank. Take your puppy out of the crate and walk him/her outside.

Praise your puppy whenever he/she uses the bathroom outside.

If your puppy pees in the house, scold him so he understands that he did something wrong, then immediately take it outside.

When your dog has been house broken, let him go to other parts of the house. But still keep him in their crate at night and in a certain area when you are away from the house.

When you are comfortable, let him roam around the house when you are away. Remember that the puppy is still young and might still go in the house but keep working with them. They will learn.

Let them out every couple of hours. Also, get them used to a crate. If you crate them at night, you won't have messes to clean up. To get them used to a crate, take a shirt that someone the puppy really likes has worn and put it in the crate with them over night. Change that shirt out every few days with a new "used" shirt so the puppy enjoys the crate. When they "go" outside, use lots of praise and even small treats. If they go inside, be stern, tell them no and put them outside. Some people say you have to catch them in the act of going potty inside for it to do any good. Other people say if you show them the mess, and sternly tell them NO, OUTSIDE, then put them outside it works. If you give them a small treat...even a half a milk bone or something like that every time they come in, they will learn that going outside to potty brings a reward. Consistency is the main thing. If more than one person is involved in training, they all need to use the same phrases and be very consistent. Puppies feel bad just from a stern voice...no need to smash their face in the mess, yell loudly, or hit them. Never punish with your hand. If you do decide the puppy needs to be swatted, use a rolled up newspaper on the rump...never with the hand...never across the face.

Say "no" like you mean it when he/she does something wrong. Give the dog awards when he/she does something right? (I use belly rugs, excitement jumps and words, milk-bone treats, ect)

Here are some guidelines on house training a puppy,

http://dogtime.com/housetraining-for-puppies.html

Make sure that you follow them strictly. Good luck!

Puppy's need to go toilet at least 8 times a day. so bring your puppy outside as often as possible wait around till he starts to pee and then repeat the word "toilet" after a while when you puppy is left outside he will no what to do.

Hi,

Using a crate is the easiest method. In a nutshell, here are the basic steps:

1. Take time off to housetrain your puppy.

2. Start using a crate the day you bring her home.

3. Take your puppy outside for a bathroom break every one to two hours during the day.

4. Plan a middle-of-the-night potty run for young puppies.

5. Shower her with treats and praise when she does a good job.

6. Don't punish your pup for accidents you haven't seen.

You should start crate training. Any dog-training book from the library or bookstore will have clear instructions how to crate-train your puppy. If you do crate-training correctly, the puppy will be basically housebroken within 2-3 days, if not sooner. Labs are usually very quick to learn.

First of all, you have to keep in mind the following are general guidelines, and while they do work for most dogs there are always exceptions. But training the dog is your responsibility, and being consistent is the best way to guarantee success.

Always take it out after every time it eats, drinks, plays and wakes from sleeping. This may sound like a lot, but it's really not. And if you are consistent, then housetraining your puppy will go much more quickly and be less stressful for you and the puppy. You have to remember this can be confusing for the puppy, which can result in a stressful situation for him if you aren't consistent, as well as being very patient.

When taking it outside to potty, have it on a leash. Take it to the area where you want him to relieve himself and use your choice of words, saying them calmly, but repeating them until he relieves himself. For example, you can say "Go potty" several times until he does, and then praise him for it.

If you raise the tone of your voice to a higher or softer pitch, he will know you are pleased with what he did and where he did it. So after you tell him (calmly) "go potty", and then in a higher (or softer) tone of voice say, "good boy" several times while patting him on the head after he does his business, he will know he pleased you and will want to continue to do so. Positive reinforcement such as this (the praise and patting) works very well on dogs.

Never, ever scold, hit or punish the dog in any way for accidents inside the house, and NEVER rub his nose in it. All that will result in is a dog with a dirty face, as well as further confusing the dog, and making it afraid of you. You have to remember this is something that requires work and effort on your part as well as his, but he is the one who is just learning. It is up to you to teach him, but do it in a patient, calm and consistent manner.

If YOU are consistent in these training methods, it should go very quickly and be quite successful, resulting in a happy dog and dog owner.

And if you live in an apartment and don't have a lawn to take him, always bring a "doggie bag" with you to clean up after him.

Here are some steps you can follow to potty train your first house puppy:

  1. Choose a designated potty area outside and take your puppy there frequently, especially after meals, naps, and play sessions.

  2. Use a consistent phrase, such as "go potty," when you take your puppy to the designated potty area to encourage them to go to the bathroom.

  3. Reward your puppy with treats and praise when they go potty in the designated area.

  4. Supervise your puppy at all times when they are inside the house, so you can catch them in the act of eliminating and interrupt them. If you catch your puppy in the act of eliminating inside, interrupt them with a loud noise (such as clapping) and immediately take them outside to the designated potty area.

  5. Gradually increase the amount of time you leave your puppy unsupervised in the house as they become more reliable at going to the bathroom outside.

It's important to be consistent and patient while training your puppy, as it may take some time for them to learn where they should go to the bathroom.
