[Edit]
The E70 X5 has a red t-handle in the tool tray under the trunk floor. Use the notch in the handle to release the parking brake first. It fits onto the end of the emergency release cable, which can be found behind the left side trunk access panel, below the left taillight. Attach the handle, and give it a firm pull until you hear a pop. The brake is now released. Now, get in the driver's seat, remove the cupholder liner, insert the handle tip into the square hole and turn counterclockwise to remove the access cover for the transmission release. While pressing the brake pedal to prevent rolling, insert the square tip into the release opening, turn clockwise 90 degrees and press down to lock. The vehicle will now roll freely. A transmission warning light will appear in the instrument cluster. A yellow parking brake light will also be present.
After vehicle power has been restored, start the engine and engage the parking brake to reset it.
For whom it may concern, British models have a lock cylinder installed into the opening of the trans release. The mechanical key found in the key fob will remove it.
