There is no idle pulley on 1995 GC's with 4.0 Inline 6. To replece the serpentine belt;
1) Draw a diagram of the existing routing. 2) Loosen the alternator. 3)Remove old belt and compare to the new belt. 4) Install new belt. 5) Tighten new belt by tightening alternator.
on the 5.2 and 5.6 just rotate tension pulley to the right if you are standing in front of Jeep install and release the tension pulley and let it tighten
To remove and reinstall the Serpentine Belt on 1995 Grand Cherokee
I just replaced the alternator in my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There are two bolts on the back side of the Power Steering pump. These have to loosened up first. There is also a tensioner bolt underneath this same area. Make sure you loosen the bolts on back of the PS pump first. What I did to reinstall the serpentine belt was to mark the bolt on the tensioner to make sure I got it back to the same place, then let out the tensioner bolt until I could slip the serpentine belt on. (Note: Make sure you follow the diagram inside the engine compartment on top of the radiator shield when reinstalling the belt or else you may install it wrong and may damage the water pump.) After installing the serpentine belt (again, make sure you have it on right) you have to tighten up the tensioner bolt, then tighten up the two bolts on the back of the PS pump. It says in the Hayes Manual to use a tension gauge to get the right tension on the belt.
There are good instructions in the Hayes Manual for the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The serpentine belt has an idler pulley along it's path that has to be detensioned in order to easily put on a new belt. The idler should be near the top of the front of the engine. In order to loosen the tension you will have to get either a large socket (preferable) or a good sized adjustable wrench to put on the bolt in the center of the pulley. I believe that you turn this in a counterclockwise direction and it will ease up on the tension. You should have a sticker on top of the radiator that shows the routing of the belt. Put the belt around all pulleys per the sticker and then with one hand loosen the tension on the idler and slip the belt over the idler pulley. There is no tension adjustment other than what is provided by the idler pulley spring which is built in. After you do this once you'll find it to be one of the easiest repair jobs you can do and the belt is available at any auto parts store.
they make a serpentine belt tool that you can get at just about any autoparts store to help you remove it.
