As with many things on computers, there is more than one way.

If you select Insert, then one of the options is "Symbol"; you will find accented characters on the dialog that appears.

A quicker way is to type Ctrl+<accent> followed by the letter.

For example, typing Ctrl+' followed by e produces é.

Navigate to your windows character map from Start > Program Files > Accessories. Now select your font, and you should be able to browse all the special characters available to you. The bottom right corner shows you an alt code you can use to type the character (using the numbers pad), or you can hit select and copy then paste the character.

Alternatively, if you are a touch typist and prefer shorter "shortcuts" and/or you don't like to use the alt key, you should try a utility I came across at typeaccentpro.com. Using it you can type any accent in only two key strokes and it is fully customizable.

What I just now tried is, I typed a word, for example, type then placed an accent mark after the p, thus: typ'e. Then I superscripted the accent mark and it looks like this: typ'e. this is a cheapie way. Better to get a translator software to help you. That sample (typ'e) appears much better in WordPerfect.

There is an ASCII code for any character, symbol, or other regular or accented letter.

To use the ASCII code, hold down the [alt] key and type the four-digit code given in the linked ASCII codes chart.

ex: the code [alt+ 0241] > ñ

The method works in any text or word processing software.

A2:

MSWord allows inserting an accented character by "sticking" the accent mark then typing the letter you want accented. Fer instance:

To type an ñ you type [Ctrl] + [shift] + ~ (this causes the tilde to stick, nothing will show on the screen.) Then type the n

You can do an è (not terribly useful in Spanish) if you type [Ctrl] + ` then e

Remember, the [Ctrl] key makes the accent mark stick until you type the next letter.

Cedilla = , (Mostly French, and old Cervantes-era Spanish)

Acute = '

Grave = ` (mostly French)

Tilde = ~

Umlaut/dieresis = : (as in "vergüenza" shift of the semicolon)

Hat/circumflex = ^ (mostly French--shift of the 6)

Word won't stick the accent in if the accent/character combination doesn't exist. Check the linked ascii table to see what's 'legal'.

If like me, you touch type and need to use accents frequently, you might prefer to use a utility such as that available from http://www.typespanishaccents.com. You can type the accents in only two key strokes which for me is quite important when typing long essays. If on the otherhand you only use accents now and again, then the above method is spot on. Hope either method works out for you :)

For Microsoft users:

I don't think there's any way to add an accent to a letter. Instead, you have the option to insert a symbol that shows the letter with the exact accent you want.

You do this by using the symbol function. In older versions of Microsoft Word, you should see on your toolbar a button with a horseshoe on it. That's your symbol function. Click on that button. It should give you a whole bunch of options to choose from. If you don't see what you're looking for, scroll down. You will eventually find it. When you do, select it, and then click on the "insert" button. Exit out of the window and that letter will be in your document.

In newer versions of Microsoft, you can use the "Insert" function. These are the keyboard commands to get what you need:

Alt + n, u. You'll get a small dropdown box of symbols. If it's not there, selection "More symbols" and then scroll down until you find what you want. Highlight it and click on "Insert". The exit out of the screen.
