Where the roof meets the top of the front windsheild, there should be a lever on each side. Pull the levers to unlock the roof from the front window. Then down to the lower right of your steeringwheel, there should be a switch to operate it. If that does not work then their are other issues with motor or wireing. It can also be manually done. If there is no power, unlock the roof from the window and go in your trunk, there is a motor for the roof with tubes running in and out of it. disconnect those tubes, but make sure they are sitting in a container as fluid will pour out if you dont.
Didn't make a convertible in 1984. It has Targa roof panel that can be removed with a tool.
In the trunk of the car find the wires and unplug them. Take a wire known to be hot and touch the wire. One is for up and one is for down. If they work then the relay is bad. If it still doesn't work it is the motor itself.
It did not 'burn down' however a fire in 1984 destroyed the roof in the south transept.
It is very difficult to manually raise the roof. The top system is hydrolic. I once asked if I can convert it to a manual roof and I was told no way because of the hydrolic system. Sorry for the bad news, but the best thing to do is to figure out what the problem is. If it is the motor you can by pass it with a switch. Darren 1992 sunbird conv owner If you unhook the hydrolics from your trunk it is fine to do it. It is actually quicker if you do it that way because you can just flip it and go. When you take it off, make sure you have someone with the hoses and a cup to catch the rest of the fluid when you lower it for the first time, otherwise you will have a mess in your trunk.
