The way the expiration date is expressed on cigarette packs varies, so you have to know the "code" for the brand. For an example, see the Related Question for Newports.

Generally, cigarettes are sold well within any expiration date, especially if they are name-brand cigarettes or popular off-brands. Once the pack is open, the cigarettes get stale quickly.
