2. Prepare Your USB device (min. capacity 1GB) using RUFUS (free app for making bootable USB)
3. Make sure You set USB device as first bootable device in BIOS
4. Reinstall Your Win XP
If you're talking about using a internal hard drive with USB interface, yes. You need a IDE or SATA to USB interface cable that is available in many computer stores.
If you are using Win 7 or Win 8 , you can find Bitlocker in control panel, this feature is able to password protect flash drives. There is no direct upgrade from Windows XP to Win 7. Any of version of Win 7 you purchase will remove Win XP and all programs and data. You will need to back up all data and reinstall all programs.
