How do you remove Startpage 6 AQ trojan from a Windows 2000 system? |
[Edit] |
Answer
This is for Windows XP but It can easily be adapted to Windows 2000. I propose a standard operating procedure originating from two SOPs I found on the net. Here are the links.

Prefetcher folder.
The different steps of the sequence below and the order of them look to be important as Eagle mentionned. I used it on a Windows XP OS. History. I've got STARTPAGE 6.AQ for more than 6 weeks well before I could find its name on the net (Google Search). I tried many ways to eradicate it. No success. I could remove the trojan but it came back a few hours later or on the next day ( in IE temporary files, in cookies folder, in Windows System32 DLL files, in Registry files,…). It's a variant and a mutant : it continuously changes of name (mostly DLL name). The following sequence I used a few days ago seems to works. I don't get this trojan anymore and…I cross my fingers… Steps sequence for Windows XP. 1. Don't connect the PC to the web. 2. make a CLEAR DISK (Start-> Accessories-> Tools-> Clear Disk-> Activate all the choices-> OK-> clean). 3. run your virus remover(s). I've got AVG freeware which detects and remove Startpage 6aq each time). 4. run CleanUp! (deletes all IE temporary files and all Windows temporary files). 5. run a Registry Cleaner (RegClean, EasyCleaner or one like that). 6. use everything you've got that cleans your PC….Don't forget to deactivate your PREFETCHER folder (see the link abose : useless and dangerous memory... 7. deactivate the Automatic Restore (all former restore points will be deleted) : same pathway as for Windows Clear Disk. 8. Turn off your PC (to take all the modifications into account). 9. Turn on your PC. 10. Rerun once again all your cleaner softs (Clear Disk, AVG, any virus or trojan remover,, CleanUp!, RegClean, Easy Cleaner,…): to check…nobody knows the last trick…. 11. Activate a new Restore point and remember it's date and name (for the case you get the trojan back, you can restore the PC at this …safe…date). 12. cross your fingers and light a candle. 13. At last, don't reproach me if it don't work.
