A check engine light could mean many things on a 1988 Nissan Sentra. The light could mean anything to a fuel cap not being tight enough to bad spark plugs.
For the 1988 1.6 and for most cars, follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to the engine block. Remove the hose from the engine block then remove the flange the hose was connected to (usually 2 bolts but may be 3 bolts on the Nissan). The thermostat is behind the flange.

remove neg.cable.then positive cable cable from starter,remove male to female wire ,then remove 2 bolts holding starter to engine.
If this is a fuel-injected car, the pump is in the tank. I believe in 1987 they went from Carb to fuel-injected. If it is a carb, it is on the lower right side of the engine.
