Answer
It's easy. To remove the shift knob, grasp it firmly and twist it counter-clockwise, like you would the top on a bottle. That's it. Nothing fancy.

Although the previous answer is right for most vehicles, some do have a retainer nut holding them onto the shaft. look closely at how it is attached
