Baking soda and a little elbow grease!

I have an old farm sink that the enamel is wearing off. Not wanting to use harsh cleaners I looked for the best thing that wouldn't further damage my sink.

Here's what to do

Get a small box of baking soda and make a paste using water (needs to be soupy). Spread it on the area that needs to be cleaned and let it sit there for 20-30 minutes. After that use an abrasive sponge (I used a Dobie) and scrub the surface clean, adding a little water when necessary. The bicarbonate won't harm the surface and it will look pretty good. (Not as good as new but pretty darn close (and white too)!

I use a mild cleaner and a magic eraser (I think they are called Mr Clean magic eraser), those white scrub pads remove just about anything with little to no effort. CLR Kitchen and Bathroom is a good remover of the black marks also but it has a strong smell. However nothing will remove black marks if it really a chip in the sink. the porcelain sink has just a thin coating over it and it is black underneath.

The trick with stainless steel is to clean it without scratching it.

You can try a low-abrasion cleaner, such as SoftScrub. It's a good idea to avoid high-abrasion cleaners, such as Comet, that you would normally use on a porcelain surface, because after a period of using that cleaner, your sink will have a matte finish.

Cleaning a sink is a very simple task. All you need to do is spray it with a cleaner and wipe it out with a paper towel.

You can clean rust spots off a porcelain sink easily with a product like Bar Keeper's Friend. This oxalic acid product can be made into paste that removes rust stains. One caution though: rust stains can be permanently set by using a chlorine-based cleaner.
