If the pool is full, one of the easiest and cheapest ways is to lower the pools pH and Total Alkalinity below the acceptable range making the water slightly acidic. For the next week (or until the scale is gone) brush down the entire pool twice daily. The idea behind this is water naturally tries to balance itself out; if it is lacking carbonates and bicarbonates (the scale on your walls) it will dissolve it trying to get those levels back in balance. After the scale is gone, keep your water in balance and add a stain and scale preventative weekly.

My guess is that your fiberglass pool is white (attracts less sunlight) and your friends' vinyl pools are blue or some other darker color, which attract more sunlight, therefore making them warmer.
Vinyl lined pools require less chemical treatment to use since it is not a porous material unlike cement lined ones require more chemical treatment (more porous material). Cement lined ones form more algae than vinyl.
There are three basic tests for outdoor swimming pools:chlorine (ppm - parts per million)pH (in pH units, from 0 - 14, 7.0 - 8.0 is normal for a pool)stabilizer (ppm, from 20 - 100)This applies to all chlorinated pools, INCLUDING 'salt water' pools, which are also chlorinated by the salt water chlorine generator. It can be helpful to test for total alkalinity (60 - 180 ppm, depending) though this is rarely necessary on small vinyl pools. On concrete pools of all types, and pools with heaters, it's important to test for calcium (ppm, 80 - 300 ppm, depending) since LOW calcium can damage concrete pools, and high calcium can cause cloudiness in pools and scale in heaters or pools. On pools filled with water from wells, or from old iron distribution systems, it's helpful to test for metals, such as iron or manganese. Likewise, pools using copper ionizers need to test for copper.
