There are carpet shampoos and general spot treatment products specially made to remove pet odors from almost anything in your home. I've used most of them and they do work, however, you might need to increase the strength used depending on the circumstances. There are also products available you can use to control odors from dog poo in your yard. Febreeze is good like the other responder recommended for those in-between times.

Bath your dog approximately once a month during the summer and every 2 months in the winter (do not leave them outside damp!) Then shampoo your carpets and "Febreeze spray" is excellent for dog or cat odors. I have 2 dogs and a cat and no one smells my pets.
